The Carnegie Mellon Institute for eCommerce was formed in 1998 as a joint program of the Graduate School of Industrial Administration (GSIA) and the School of Computer Science (SCS).  It also includes affiliated faculty from the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management.   The reason the program is thoroughly interdisciplinary reflects our perception that electronic commerce spans the business, technology and policy arenas.

The function of the Institute is to serve as a focal point for Electronic Commerce activities at Carnegie Mellon University, located in Pittsburgh, PA, to offer degree programs and executive education and to conduct research.

The Institute is administered by GSIA.  The administrative program manager is Ms. Vickie Motz.  The Institute's program are managed jointly by a Director, Prof. Tridas Mukhopadhyay (GSIA) and a Co-Director, Prof. Michael Shamos (SCS).  Associate Director Prof. Robert Thibadeau (SCS) is responsible for the Practicum and the program's Internet infrastructure.

The Institute currently offers a 12-month Master of Science in Electronic Commerce (MSEC) degree.  The 1999 program had 34 students from around the world.  Approximately 1/3 were from outside the United States.  The 2000 program had 59 students from 15 countries.  56% were from outside the United States and 10% already had MBAs. The 2001 program has 34 students evenly divided between U.S. and international students.
